Reaching Potential
Did you know?
- Only 12% of children aged 0-12 have access to regulated child care even though close to 70% of
mothers are in the labour market.
- 90% of Canadians indicated in a recent survey that they expect governments to deliver
accessible, affordable nationally coordinated child care
- Youth community participation has been shown to result in a decrease
in risky behaviours such as substance abuse, smoking, and criminal behaviour
What can be done?
- The federal government has made important gains over the last several
years with the Early Childhood Development Agreement and the Multi-Lateral
Framework Agreement as part of the policy platform of the National Children’s Agenda.
- We still have much more to do. It’s time for the federal government to continue
its leadership role to establish targets towards the further development of comprehensive
programs and services for early childhood care and education, including accessible and
inclusive child care that is publicly funded.
- It’s time to acknowledge that the cuts to social and community programs have negatively
impacted school-aged children and youth. There is an urgent need to develop a strategy to
address the needs for community preventative health and social services that contribute to
the capacity of all children to reach their potential.
Ask the questions...- Will your party support the development of a comprehensive
child care system as Canadians have indicated they want?
- Will your party stop the cuts to social programs that help children and youth reach their full potential?
