Meeting Basic Needs
Did you know?
- One in every six Canadian children lives in poverty.
- 40% of all food bank users are children (306,552 out of 777,869).
- More than 700,000 households in Canada are in severe housing need, with more than half of
their income being paid out in rent. That is more than all of the households of Nova Scotia,
New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island combined.
- A two-income family with two children that lives on minimum wages in a large city lives below the poverty line.
What can be done?
- Raise the National Child Tax Benefit (NCTB) to $4,200 per child.
- Increase investments for social housing so that 25,000 new social housing units will
be developed every year for the next four years. This will enable families in need to avoid housing-driven poverty.
- Increase parental leave benefits from 55% to 75% of earnings so that caring for newborn children
will not be a source of financial hardship.
- Expand eligibility for parental leave to include part-time and self-employed workers so
that all of Canada’s workers are covered.
Ask the questions...
- Does your party support increasing the National Child Tax Benefit,
which supports the incomes of lower and middle class families, in order to help eliminate child poverty?
- Does your party intend to invest more in affordable housing in Canada?
